Undaunted by Thursday night’s threat of rain, 4-H riders from across the state arrived at dawn on Friday at the Quay County Fairgrounds. They were there early to get ready and to compete in the State 4-H Horse Show and 4-H Quay County Rodeo, hosted by the Quay County 4-Hers. At each of the trailers, 4-Hers were busy putting the polish on the last minute details. Suzette Brooks of Albuquerque gave her daughter’s horse, Sunny, an early morning whisker trim, while her daughter, Sydney, trimmed Sunny between the ears. And then Sydney got prepared herself. Others, who had a rowdy mount, had to take several minutes to walk or ride out any equine jitters. A couple of the girls worked on their horses’ manes and then opened their cosmetic cases to fix any wayward strands of their own hair. Backs straight and poised, they brought their horses into the ring under the direction of ring steward, Christina Flemming of Tucumcari, and judge, Martha Sayles of Las Cruces.
