Mayfield retained as mayor

Less than a week after winning re-election as the city commissioner for District 4, Mary Mayfield was retained as mayor during Monday’s reorganization meeting. At the meeting, Mayfield was kept as mayor by a unanimous vote from the Commission, which chooses a mayor every time a new Commission is formed through elections. “The vote of confidence means an awful lot to me,” Mayfield said. “I believe we’re moving in a positive direction (as a city).” Antonio Apodaca was also retained as mayor pro-tem and James Lafferty was sworn in to replace Bettie Ditto. Ditto decided not to run for re-election, but indicated she still wanted to help the Commission. “I’m going to be sitting in the front row (at these meetings) hearing you, helping you if I can,” Ditto said. The reorganization came at the end of a brief meeting. In other business at the meeting: • Commissioners approved Resolution 2006-06, requesting participation in the 2006-07 Municipal Arterial Program. The program gives money from the state Transportation Department for roadwork, providing that those roads are connected to arterial roads and that the municipality contribute to the cost of work. The city offers an in-kind contribution of equipment and labor. The work would improve Adams Street from Estrella Avenue north to Robison Avenue and Amarosa Avenue from First Street to Adams Street. • Commissioners approved budget increases for the senior citizen’s program of Tucumcari, Logan and Melrose. The funding for the increases was covered by grant monies. • The Commission heard a report from City Manager Richard Primrose, who said the city was planning an event at North Side Park in honor of Grace Madrid, the late county commissioner who died May 18. The dedication would take place April 15, Primrose said. • Virginia Wright of the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce encouraged people to attend the March 21 Roundhouse Review, to be held at the Tucumcari Convention Center.
