Mesalands Community College and its Small Business Development Center are offering a summer program where participants study Spanish in Mexico. A preview meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at the college.
Hola! If that seems to be the extent of your Spanish but there’s a desire to learn more, this summer offers an opportunity to learn the language — and test it on native speakers in Mexico. A two-week immersion course, worth up to six college credits, is being offered by Mesalands Community College in conjunction with its Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for anyone interested, according to a release from the college. A free preview meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Mesalands in room 312 in building C where questions of cost and other information will be available. “It’s a neat opportunity to study language and culture in Mexico,” said Mesalands Public Relations Director John Yearout. If speaking Spanish is not enough for the avid student, the release also said one can take classes in Salsa dancing, Mexican cooking or other activities “that will help you learn more about the rich Mexican culture just south of our border.” The classes will take place in Cuernavaca, about 45 miles south of Mexico City. The Web site iCuernavaca.com said it’s a place full of history, as it once was a home to the conqueror Cortez and continues to house the Cuauhnahuac Museum, full of pre-Columbian and conquest era exhibits, as well as a folk art museum and several murals by Diego Rivera. Also on the Cuernavaca map, the site said, is a town square flanked by a central market, the Jardin Borda — museum and grounds built for the historic couple Maximiliano and Carlota, the old cathedral and thousands of birds that roust with a ruckus in the trees at sunset. _____ What: Study Spanish in Mexico Summer Program preview meeting When: 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
