Mesalands Community College students who belong to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society do more than just sit around with a fancy title, said new member Jinnah Bates. She said they go out and actively do things, with activities like their upcoming cancer awareness campaign, and the goal of developing leadership skills. “We give back to the community,” Bates said, who, with a 4.0 GPA, has exceeded or met all membership requirements into the society while working on her diesel degree. To be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, students must be taking at least six credit hours, have completed 12 credit hours of course work on their way to an associate’s degree and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5, according to the college. To retain membership, one must maintain a 3.0 or higher. As stringent as it may seem, 20 new members were recently inducted into the society, more than half of whom attended the induction ceremony with guest speaker Doug Quarels of Tucumcari mural fame who admonished the audience to set goals in life and work hard to accomplish them. ______ New Phi Theta Kappa members Fall 2005 inductees Laura Bason, business Virginia (Jinnah) Bates, diesel Kyra Bell, elementary education Leonard Brake, criminal justice Lisa Hight, elementary education/art Michelle Bliss Marquez, education Samantha Southard, speech pathology Tonja Walker, accounting Spring 2005 inductees Ashley Adams, pre-engineering Ankita Bhakta, business Inabell Broughton, paleontology Jolean Callison, general studies Donna Marie Garcia, social work Miguela Gutierrez, general studies Samuel Hennig, secondary education Kiera Mortensen, paleontology Tammy Mowles, pre-engineering Timothy James O’Quinn, accounting Bernice Ramirez, elementary education Vicky Sandoval, social work
