Despite heavy defense by Rattler Nathan McDonald and the rest of the team, the Rattlers were still out-Foxed 65-59.
Tucumcari jumped to an early lead, but Fort Sumner dominated the middle quarters and beat the Rattlers, 65-59, in a non-district high school basketball game on Tuesday night.
Jeremy Guana scored 23 points to pace the Foxes' attack. Josh Villegas had 15 to lead Tucumcari.
The Rattlers led 13-7 after the first quarter, but fell behind 55-42 to start the final stanza. A strong comeback pushed the Rattlers within 59-56 with a minute left to play, but Fort Sumner held on.
“We missed some easy layups. We gotta try harder, work harder against the JV at practice,” said Tucumcari's Andrez Apodaca.
Coach John Span said Tucumcari needed to concentrate on stepping up the
intensity and keeping control.
Rattler Nathan McDonald concurred some of his shots could have had more
“I need to work on every low shot I have. I felt we should have won,”
McDonald said. “It was just the mistakes.”
