The Quay County 9-10-year-old All-Stars felt some pressure going into Friday’s District 3 Little League championship game at Portales’ Rotary Park.
“The boys were kind of nervous,” said Donnie Garcia, a coach for the team. “They got down early, but they kept their composure.”
Quay erased an early 2-0 deficit en route to an 8-4 victory over Clovis American, clinching a rare championship and qualifying for state competition beginning Saturday in Albuquerque.
Quay’s first-round game is against the District 6 Carlsbad team. It’s set for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Manzano Mesa Multi-Generational Center.
If they win, they will play again on Tuesday and continue to move up the bracket.
Against Clovis, Jacob Benally pitched a complete game for Quay, which tied the score with two runs in the top of the third and opened a 7-3 lead with a three-run fifth. Daniel Amparano, Alex Garcia and Jordan Walker keyed the attack on offense, Donnie Garcia said.
He said it has probably been at least 30 years since a 9-10 team from Quay has won a district title. Tony Garcia is the team’s manager, while Donnie Garcia and Bobby Gomez are the coaches.
“I know it’s been 16 years since a Tucumcari (Quay) team has gotten out of district at all,” Donnie Garcia said. “It was neat to see.”
