Local VFW raises money for Quay County vets memorial

Quay County veterans are one step closer to being memorialized in granite. VFW Post 2528 members Tony Apodaca and Lydia Fazekas on Friday presented a check to Diane Morton, the local office manager for Glaze Monument Company. The $5,625 check will cover the cost for a veterans monument at Veterans Park for Quay County veterans. The mission is to honor those who have died in combat from 1916 to the present. “I’ve been working to raise this money for about three years,” Fazekas said. “We held raffles, cake walks and we received many donations from various organizations.” Morton said the design of the monument is still being finalized but will include three 6-foot tall pillars made of gray granite, quarried and cut in Elberton, Ga. “I showed the VFW members 10 designs,” Morton said. “The middle pillar will have the dedication and the other two pillars will contain the names of those who have sacrificed for our freedom. The project should be completed by November.” Apodaca, also a city commissioner, said the city gave permission for the placement of the monument last year. “I’m really happy about this,” Apodaca said. “It’s time we honor all the veterans of Quay County. The monuments will contain short histories of the Vietnam and Korean conflicts.” Morton added that the monument will add beauty to Veterans Park and should become a time-honored monument to fallen veterans.
