Rattler track teams place well at Estancia

Boys The Rattler boys are becoming the first-class team of Class AA track and field with another first-place finish Thursday at Estancia. Tucumcari scored 155 points, defeating teams from Santa Rosa, Estancia, Laguna, Hope, Pecos, Escalante and Coronado. Chris McCasland won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.98 and will compete at the state meet in that event. The Tucumcari 400-meter relay team, Eric Holt, Justin Benavidez, Steven Taylor and McCasland, took first with a time of 45.39. The 800-meter relay team, Holt, Benavidez, McCasland and Nathan McDonald, also took first with a time of 1:35.20. The 1600-meter relay team also took first. Holt, Taylor, Nemi Salvador and Austin Sellers finished the 1600 meters with a time of 3:51.19. As if that were not enough, the medley relay team also finished first with a time of 4:14.18. The medley team consisted of Salvador, Benavidez, Taylor and Anthony Apodaca. Adrian Jones took third in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. In the field, Nathan McDonald qualified for state in the javelin event with a throw of 171 feet, 2 inches which earned him first place at Estancia. Nemi Salvador qualified for the state long jump competition with a first-place finish at Estancia. Salvador jumped a distance of 20 feet, 4 inches. Stephen Quintana finished third in the shot put at 37 feet, one inch. Girls The Lady Rattlers finished fourth at Estancia with a team score of 64 points. The Estancia team won with a score of 97 points. The 1600-meter relay team, Jocelyn DeBord, Cydnie Rich, Amanda Tapia and T’Shawna Span took second place with a time of 4:57.86. The 800-meter relay team, DeBord, Span, Kaitlin Lopez and Whitney Spinks, finished third with a time of 2:01.35. Individually, Theresa Chacon won the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:20.34. Tapia finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:55.41. Sam Montano was third in discus competition. She threw the discus 81 feet, 10 and a half inches. Spinks took second in the triple jump with a distance of 27 feet, 4 and a half inches. Next up for the Rattler track teams is a meet at Fort Sumner, 3 p.m. Tuesday.
