'Comcast Cares' comes off well

The morning hours of Comcast Cares Day, Saturday, saw temperatures chilly and a bit uncomfortable, but that did not stop people from turning out for the fourth annual event in Tucumcari at Tucumcari School System’s Outdoor Classroom. In fact, according to Tucumcari’s Comcast Office Manager Frederick Dominguez, the 2004 edition of Comcast Cares Day marks the second highest number of people out to help with the cleaning up and planting at the school districts’ outdoor classroom. “Despite the chilly weather in the morning,” said Dominguez, “57 people came out had helped make the day a success. I think that is a wonderful turnout. That’s just short of the record number of 61 that showed up last year to help.” Lori Pacheco who works in the local Comcast office said she for one enjoyed all of the different aspects of Comcast Cares Day that took place at the outdoor classroom. She pointed to the camaraderie and good feelings of the participants in addition to being able to help improve the outdoor classroom. “I think everything went very well,” said Pacheco. “I think it is a very important project. It gives kids a place to experience the outdoors and still be safe and under the supervision teachers and parents.” Dominguez said he feels the importance of the project is one of the reasons that so many people, both individuals and groups, turn out annually to help out with the day. Dominguez said such groups as Altrusa, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VFW Auxiliary all took part in the clean-up day. “That was in addition to the ‘Trek for Trash’ people,” said Dominguez. The 57 volunteers pulled weeds, picked up trash, planted trees and wheat grass throughout the acres set aside for Tucumcari Schools’ students. For their time, volunteers were given two different t-shirts and certificates good for discounts at a number of area businesses. Dominguez said everyone seem to truly enjoy being at the clean-up and for that reason along with the need for the day has encouraged him to schedule another Comcast Cares Day for 2005.
