Amistad Charter School is sponsoring an ice cream social and pie auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to provide an opportunity for the public to meet the political candidates for Northeastern New Mexico. The candidates will begin speaking at 7 p.m. with the pie auction immediately following.
Each candidate will have five to seven minutes to let their constituents know where they stand on election issues. Potential voters will also be able to register for the upcoming local, regional, and national election at the social.
Candidates planning to attend include: Robert Frost, candidate for New Mexico State Senator; Thomas George Gonzales and Justin Bennet, for Union County Commissioner; Joyce Sowers, Union County Clerk; Judge Roderick Kennedy, for retention on the Court of Appeals; Jeffrey Shannon and a representative of Donald Gallegos, who are running for District Attorney.
Proceeds from the event will be used as matching funds toward a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant to help fund the renovation of the Amistad School.
