Mesalands rodeoers compete

A relatively inexperienced Mesalands Community College Rodeo Team traveled to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales to participate and co-sponsor the season’s first intercollegiate rodeo. “Our first rodeo wasn’t a very good showing,” said coach Danny Garcia of Mesalands. “We had mostly freshmen competing and they were pretty tense about their first college-level competition.” Of 130 calf ropers, Ray Ballard finished just short of the short round with a 12th place finish in the long round. Matthew Antone came close in steer wrestling, finishing 11th in a field of 70. There were 115 barrel racers and Mesalands cowgirls including Kelly Speer, Crystal Martinez, Samantha Southard, and Amanda Price all finished in the top 25 in the long round. This week the team will not compete but will participate in the Mesalands Community College Foundation’s Fourth Annual Rodeo Scholarship Barbecue and Team Exhibition at the Quay County Fairgrounds.
