Vic Breen Golf Tourney deemed success

Despite weather more suited for duck hunting than golf, the annual Vic Breen Memorial Golf Classic took place over the weekend with 43 golfers competing in the tournament. According to Tucumcari Club Professional Charlie Maciel, this is one of the most highly regarded tournaments in Eastern New Mexico. Maciel said that in spite of the inclement weather, many of the golfers came from as far away as central Texas and Las Cruces. Chipper Breen, one of the organizers of the tournament, said he was not only impressed but was surprised at just how far many of the golfers traveled to take part in the tournament. “They are loyal to the town and this tournament,” said Breen referring to many former Tucumcari residents who returned for the Vic Breen Classic. “I couldn’t believe some of the weather they played in on Saturday morning. I think we had a flood watch on a couple of the holes.” Breen said the weather was so bad that the tournament was shortened which has rarely happened in the past. “Still, all things considered,” said Breen, “I think it went very well. We got some golf in and there was lots to eat and a lot of wet towels when we were done.” The tournament organizer also said that money was raised for the three scholarship recipients. “After all that’s what this tournament is all about, raising scholarship money for deserving young people,” said Breen. This year, three seniors will receive $500 to be used at the college of their choice. The three are Justin Galvan, Larry Roybal Jr. and Aaron Peacock. Winner of Individual low gross was Bret Barter followed by Matt Williams and Mike Martoya and Edgar Shipley.
