Basketball camp helps future Rattlers

Tucumcari High School basketball coach Alicia Trujillo and her husband Albert co-hosted the “Nothing but Net” basketball camp for local youths last week at Tucumcari Elementary School. Coach Trujillo said the elementary school students improved their basketball skills dramatically over the course of the week. “The kids have been learning why things are done the way they’re done,” said Trujillo. “Most of them seem serious about wanting to play organized basketball.” The elementary school students went to camp Monday through Friday for three hour sessions. At the end of Wednesday’s session, all 22 students had worked up a sweat. Elizabeth Smith, 10, said the competition was tough. “I think all of us are pretty good,” said Smith. “Everybody is trying really hard. I’m learning how to do everything. I didn’t know ball handling very well, but I’m better at it now.” Erika Tafoya, 10, said she liked the “hot shot” drill. In the hot shot drill, you have to start on one spot and shoot until you make a basket, then you can move to the next spot,” she said. “I scored 10 points. The highest score was 11 points.” Many of the children said they dreamed of playing for Tucumcari High School someday. Coach Trujillo said the children are learning the necessary skills, but it will be up to each child to continue to work on their new skills. “They will have to practice at home,” she said. “We have taught them drills they can practice at home even if they don’t have a basketball hoop.” Travis Garcia, 10, said that Coach Trujillo has helped him with his shooting touch. “I’ve learned how to imagine that my hand is going through the basket when I release the ball for a shot,” he said. Friday morning the children’s parents were allowed in the gym to watch their children execute their newly acquired skills. Coach Trujillo told the students that she wants them to demonstrate their ball handling skills during halftime of a Tucumcari High School basketball game next season. Trujillo also held camp for middle school students last week during afternoon sessions. She said that she expects the “Nothing but Net” basketball camps to become a tradition in Tucumcari.
