Apprentice tour comes to Tucumcari

Three young singers from the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Program will perform in Tucumcari April 19 at 7 p.m in a free concert for area residents. The group of performers will offer a free concert for the public as well as in-school programs for children in and around the Tucumcari area. “Our apprentice singers are The Santa Fe Opera’s best musical ambassadors,” said the opera’s General Director Richard Gaddes. “They are young, energetic, and enormously talented, and they love traveling throughout the southwest and making new friends for opera. Because we know that not everyone can come to Santa Fe to hear the opera, we feel that this annual tour is one of our most important outreach projects.” Representatives from the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce said the singers promise to be a very entertaining presentation. “This is some wonderful entertainment,” said Kim Grey. In the public program to be performed at the Tucumcari High School Auditorium, the three singers, soprano Camille Tierney, tenor Mark Calvert, and baritone Corey McKern, will perform arias and duets from Alcina, Rigoletto, The Barber of Seville, Don Pasquale, I pagliacci, Falstaff, and The Mikado. Selections from The Land of Smiles, Carousel, On the Town, and songs by Samuel Barber and Ricky Ian Gordon complete the program. The operetta Red Carnations will be presented in a fully-staged version to schoolchildren in Tucumcari. The work by Robert Baksa is a simple love story involving mistaken identities. The singers are all former members of the Opera’s Apprentice program. Camille Tierney, an apprentice last summer, sang the role of Therese in the 2003 production of Intermezzo. She has appeared with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Central City Opera in Colorado, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and Sarasota Opera. Mark Calvert, an apprentice in 1997 and 1998, recently made his debut with Chicago Opera Theatre in The Good Soldier Schweik. Corey McKern was a member of the Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Program and performs regularly with Opera Omaha, most recently in La Boheme, Carmen, and Mark Adamo’s Little Women. He was an apprentice in 2001 and will returns for a second apprenticeship this summer. Accompanist and musical collaborator Kirt Pavitt is a long-time member of the Opera’s music staff. He regularly accompanies noted singers and instrumentalists in London, New York, and cities throughout North America.
