TEXICO — Ryan DeWit scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter Saturday night and Friona held on to beat Texico 58-57 in the boys finals of the Citizens Bank Border Shootout.

Gabriel Avalos added eight of his 10 points in the second half for the Chieftains (5-2), including a pair of 3-point shots in the third quarter which helped Friona keep the game tied 42-42.

Miguel Reyna scored 21 points to lead Texico, while Wayne Skabelund added 11. Skabelund had a 3-pointer and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final period to keep the Wolverines (2-2) close.

Both of Texico’s losses this season have been by a single point.

Logan 75, Farwell 53 (third place) — The Longhorns opened a 25-9 lead at the quarter and were content to play the Steers relatively even the rest of the way.

Rylan Calbert had five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points for Logan (3-1), while Levi Molesworth added 18 points.

Farwell (3-3) got three treys and 16 points from Austin Morgan, and two 3-pointers and 15 points from Collin Christian.

Dexter 41, Bovina 17 (fifth place) — The Demons (2-1) held the Mustangs to just three points in the first three quarters in coasting to a lopsided victory.

Kevin Bonner scored 14 of his game-high 17 points in the second quarter as the Demons outscored Bovina 23-2. He had four 3-pointers, three of them in that period.

Abel Rocha scored five points for the Mustangs (1-3).

Melrose 43, Floyd 33 (seventh place) — Trailing by three points, the Buffaloes outscored Floyd 29-16 to pull away in a battle of teams looking for their first win of the season.

Melrose’s Daniel Lyons was the only player on either team to reach double figures with 10 points, but nine other players contributed to the scoring column for the Buffs (1-2).

Floyd got eight points apiece from Justin Whitecotton and Colby Rogers, and seven each from W.T. Whitecotton and Larkin Lindsey.
