With five consecutive Class 2A state championships under its belt, the Texico volleyball team has set the bar pretty high for itself.

The one thing Lady Wolverines coach Kristen Scanlan isn’t too sure about is how they’ll overcome the loss to graduation of her twin daughters Fallon and Erin, the setter and libero, respectively.

“It’s going to take a little longer for us to be comfortable as a group,” said Scanlan, entering her fourth season as head coach. “It takes a while (for players to adjust) from the JV level to the varsity level.”

Not that they’re hurting — with twins Jordyn and Jaylyn Cooper returning as outside hitters and 6-foot-1 junior Shaylee Anderson in the middle. The Coopers have started since they were freshmen.

Scanlan concedes her team will be in the hunt.

“I think we have as good of a chance as anybody,” she said. “I’m really excited about what I’ve seen so far.”

Two other Clovis-area teams came in second in state competition last fall — Fort Sumner in Class 1A and Grady in the new Class B.

The Vixens have won five state titles under veteran coach Lisa McMath, the last in 2008. Since then, they’ve lost to Tatum in each of the last two state finals.

“Tatum will be the favorite,” McMath said. “They come back with everybody (from last year), but one player.”

The Vixens’ District 3-1A rival, Melrose, also should be a contender, led by sisters Cara and Caley Barnard.

“We have a lot of high hopes this year,” coach Dana Cooper said. “We haven’t beaten Fort Sumner in several years, but we’re getting closer.

“We have a lot of experience; five of my six starters have actually played in the (1A state tournament at Rio Rancho’s) Santa Ana Star Center.”

Grady reached its first state final last year, losing to District 2-B rival Elida. The Lady Bronchos have a new coach in Grady alum Robin Jones

Clovis Christian also put together a winning record last year, but the Lady Eagles will have to fight their way though Elida and Grady in district play.
