Senior Erin Scanlan shot 39-47 — 86 on Thursday to lead Texico to the team championship in the Clovis Invitational at Municipal Golf Course.

Texico shot a team score of 383 to top Clovis High by eight shots. Portales came in third at 404 and Hobbs followed at 423.

Texico had three of the day’s top five girls scores, with senior Laura McFarden at 92 and junior Alison Myers at 95. The Lady Wolverines earned their second leg toward state competition, while Scanlan notched her second individual leg and McFarden her first.

The Lady Wildcats were led by a 96 from sophomore Kristin Bradley. They earned their third of three necessary legs to qualify for state Class 5A competition as a team.

“We did a decent job of handling the (windy) weather, and that was good,” Lady Cats coach Steve Speck said. “What I’m thrilled with is that it’s a different player coming through every time out. It’s been a pretty good team effort.”

In boys competition, a Clovis junior varsity squad shot 356 and took team honors over Portales, with 370. Tucumcari did not have a full team, although the Rattlers’ Gabe Montoya earned medalist honors with a 78.

Junior Emelio Romero was the Wildcats’ top scorer, shooting 38-43 — 81.

The Clovis boys and girls and the Texico girls are slated to compete in the Roswell Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
