RIO RANCHO — Defending Class 2A girls state champion Texico is off to a fast start again.

The top-seeded Lady Wolverines (25-2) cruised to a 63-30 win over Magdalena on Tuesday night at Santa Ana Star Center. They return for a 9:45 a.m. semifinal game on Thursday against surprising 13th seed Dulce, which stunned Estancia 64-51 on Tuesday.

Sophomore post Shaylee Anderson scored 17 points and junior guard Jordyn Cooper 15 for Texico, which used a dominating 25-8 run in the second period to build a 39-13 halftime lead.

“(Anderson) did a great job,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “We executed, and she did a good job of posting up.”

Junior guard Keandra Chavez led Magdalena (17-13) with three 3-pointers and 17 points, but Texico’s defense held the Lady Steers to 11 field goals.

“Hopefully, the clock struck midnight,” Durham quipped in looking ahead to the matchup with Dulce. “It’s going to be loud Thursday morning, so it’s going to be a fun enviromnent.”
