Portales junior Macy Mitchell drives to the basket against Socorro freshman Makayla Jacobs during Friday night’s Class 3A first-round girls state tournament game at the Ram Athletic Center. The Lady Rams face District 4-3A rival Ruidoso in an 11:30

The Portales and Ruidoso girls basketball teams are getting awfully familiar with each other.

Only one of them can advance today, however, in the Class 3A state girls quarterfinals at The Pit in Albuq-uerque.

Portales (17-9) takes a No. 2 seed into today’s 11:30 a.m. matchup with the seventh-seeded Lady War-riors (16-10).

“We’re familiar with each other,” Lady Rams coach Clay Stout said. “They’re going to press and trap a lot and try to create more of an up-tempo.”

So far, Portales has had the better of it in that regard. The deliberate Lady Rams posted 46-34 and 37-28 wins over Ruidoso in a span of seven days last month.

Stout said the Lady Warriors are an athletic team with good overall size. They eliminated Taos 67-55 last Friday behind 27 points from junior guard Brittanie Vega.

“Both teams have a pretty good idea of what to expect from each other,” Stout said. “You just have to be focused on the things you can control.”

The winner advances to an 8 a.m. semifinal game on Thursday against either sixth-seeded Shiprock or 14th-seeded St. Michael’s, which blew out No. 3 seed Las Vegas Robertson 52-32 in the first round.

The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday at The Pit.
