DEXTER — The Portales Rams got a nice tuneup for the postseason on Saturday.
Pressure defense helped the Rams go on a 25-9 run in the second quarter and the Rams never looked back in a 68-36 trouncing of Dexter.
Portales (16-8) faces Lovington at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Mexico Military in Roswell in a playoff game for the top seed in three-team District 4-3A. The loser hosts third seed Ruidoso at 7 p.m. Thursday, with Tuesday’s winner playing at home in the tourney championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“It was a good way to end the season,” Rams coach Mark Gallegos said. “We got to play a lot of kids.
“I didn’t want us to look past it, so I was pleased with how we played in this game.”
Senior Miguel Vasquez scored 11 of his 14 points in the second quarter while junior Phoenix Russell had seven of his 12 for Portales. The game was a makeup of a postponement earlier this month.
Trent Johnson added 10 points for the Rams, who got points from 11 players. Seniors Clay Garnett and Steven Marquez paced the Demons (14-11), who had been in Portales’ district for several season prior to dropping to Class 2A this year, with seven points apiece.
