ALBUQUERQUE — Portales overcame an 11-point deficit in the first half, but couldn’t finish off Rehoboth, falling 50-48 in overtime in the semifinals of the Hope Christian tournament.

Miguel Vasquez, Phoenix Russell and Jesse Blue all scored 11 points for Portales (8-4).

Rashard Aevale led Rehoboth (9-3) with 16 points and Will Gordon added 11.

Portales coach Mark Gallegos described the Lynx as “a sleeper” in Class 2A.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Rehoboth, they’re a good basketball team,” Gallegos said. “But we started out really flat. We were able to come back, then at the end we got really passive on offense; we didn’t have anyone who wanted to take the ball to the basket.”

Portales had chances to win the game in regulation and tie the game in overtime, Gallegos said.

Blue missed a short jumper to win it in regulation. Trailing by two in overtime, Portales missed three shots late that would have tied the game.

“We got good looks,” Gallegos said.

Portales shot 17-of-32 from the free-throw line, including 1-of-4 when the Rams were trying to hold the lead late in the fourth quarter.

“You can’t shoot like that from the free-throw line and expect to win,” Gallegos said.

Portales plays for third at 4:30 p.m. today against the loser of Friday’s late semifinal between Taos and defending Class 3A state champion and tournament host Hope Christian.

“It was a tough loss,” Gallegos said. “we wanted to play Hope. The kids are disappointed.”
