ROSWELL — The Roswell Lady Coyotes put three players in double figures Thursday night and defeated Portales High 40-26, snapping the Lady Rams’ six-game winning streak.
Shanice Steedholdt led the Lady Coyotes (13-1), ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, with 11 points while Marika Trujillo and Diana Carrillo added 10 apiece.
Meantime, sophomore Jenna Sievers topped the Lady Rams (10-5) with nine points.
“We had some players playing out of position tonight,” Portales coach Clay Stout said. “They jumped out to an early lead and it took us a little while to adjust.”
Stout said Roswell’s size was tough for his squad to defend.
Trailing 22-11 at the half, Portales tried to mount a comeback as Sievers and senior Gabby Garcia combined for eight points in the third period. But the Lady Coyotes maintained a 31-20 cushion at the end of the period.
Trujillo scored five points in the fourth quarter to help seal the Lady Coyotes’ win.
“They started changing up their defenses on us,” Stout said. “They switched to full court man-to-man and 2-2-1 defense. The girls did a good job adjusting, but we were without Macy (Mitchell) and Cynthia (Armijo).”
Stout said Mitchell’s grandfather died this week, while Armijo was battling the flu.
Portales returns to Roswell for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday against Goddard.
