Portales’ game plan was to slow a speedy Pojoaque team. It worked most of the game.

Senior Gabby Garcia scored 12 points and junior Macy Mitchell added 10 as the Lady Rams pulled way in the fourth quarter for a 36-27 win Friday the Portales Shoot-Out.

It was the fifth-straight win for Portales (9-4). Junior guard Amber Roybal lead the Elkettes (7-5) with nine points.

“Pojoaque has some really fast guards who want to get up the floor in a hurry and score,” Portales coach Clay Stout said. “We have some kids who are hurt and sick so our defense has been focusing on slowing the game down a lot. You can’t play their game because they are so quick.”

Trailing 19-14 at halftime, Pojoaque used fullcourt pressure to pull within 24-22 heading into the fourth quarter. Amber Royal had a pair of 3-pointers in an 8-3 run.

A pair of Mitchell technical free throws started a 9-3 surge that put Portales up 33-25 with a minute left.

Pojoaque coach Juan Pep Alvarado said he waited too long to pressure Portales.

“Portales is a good ball team, and so are we,” Alvarado said. “I wanted to use our quickness against them, but it was a little too late. Defensively we did a good job, but offensively we weren’t being more creative in scoring points.”
