State champion Mayfield landed five players on the Class 5A all-state football first team, including senior running back Brandon Betancourt, who rushed for 216 yards in the Trojans’ 69-42 win over Manzano in the title game.
He was joined in the backfield by Ronnie Daniels, who leaves La Cueva as the state’s all-time leader in rushing and touchdowns.
Lineman Matt Ramondo, defensive back/kick returner Kiefer Payne and punter/placekicker Brock Baca were two-way selections for the Trojans.
Manzano had three players on the first team, including senior quarterback Ryan Trujillo, the Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico.
The Clovis Wildcats placed three players on the second team: Junior defensive lineman Fred Kelley and senior defensive backs Juan Rivas and Jordan Hill.
The Wildcats finished the season 5-7, losing to La Cueva in the state quarterfinals.
Carlsbad junior running back Eric Galindo was the lone first-team selection from District 4-5A.
The teams were selected by Class 5A coaches.
