LEVELLAND, Texas — Levelland’s defense stymied the Portales Lady Rams on, posting a 34-12 win Friday in the semifinals of the Lady Lobos’ tournament.

Portales (1-1) was outscored 10-2 in the first and the Lady Lobos never looked back.

Portales coach Clay Stout said the Levelland (8-2) had an aggressive full-court press, but his team worked hard to keep the score low.

“They’re one of the best teams in Texas,” Stout said. “Levelland is one of the best defensive teams in the state of Texas every year. They hold teams to sometimes single-digit scores. They’re just an amazing defensive team.”

Portales senior forward Gabby Garcia and sophomore guard Hannah Cissell were the tops scorers for Portales with four points each. Levelland’s Hillary Shaheen led all scorers with 10 points.

With the loss Portales plays El Paso Eastwood in the -tplace game at 2:30 p.m. (MST). Eastwood (9-3) averages 48 points and 12.3 steals a game, and Melissa Contreras averages 13 points a game to lead the Lady Troopers.

Stout said Eastwood doesn’t sport as much of a full-court press as Levelland, and run mostly zone in their half-court defense.

“We watched El Paso Eastwood play Plainview,” Stout said. “They have a really good post player on the inside, and four guards around her who are really good.”
