TEXICO — The Melrose Lady Buffaloes moved into the girls championship game of the Citizens Bank Border Shootout Friday morning, upending Farwell 44-38 in a semifinal matchup.
The Lady Buffs (2-0), who beat the Clovis junior varsity in overtime on Thursday night, face host Texico (3-0), a 61-38 winner over Floyd in Friday’s late game, in today’s 6:30 p.m. championship game. Farwell (4-4) takes on Floyd (2-2) in the 3 p.m. third-place matchup.
Eighth-grader Caley Barnard scored 13 points for Melrose, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line in the final period. The Lady Buffs led 32-23 at halftime and managed to hang on despite converting only three second-half field goals.
Keila Jennings led all scorers with 21 points for the Lady Blue. Abby Johnson added 10.
Texico got 26 points from 6-foot-1 sophomore Shaylee Anderson to offset a 25-point night by Floyd senior standout Tori Tucker in a matchup of defending state champions.
Junior Jordyn Cooper added 17 points, including three 3-pointers for the Lady Wolverines, who won the Class 2A state title last spring. The Lady Broncos, defending Class 1A champions, were within 12-9 at the quarter but steadily fell farther behind the rest of the way.
Consolation semifinals
Clovis JV 55, Dexter 34 — Carrie Sharp had 12 points and Jacee Isler added three 3-pointers en route to 10 points as the Lady Wildcats (2-1) outscored Dexter 27-4 in the third quarter to break away from a 16-16 tie. Sharp had eight points, Brandi Gomez added seven and Isler chipped in six on a pair of 3-pointers for Clovis JV.
The Lady Demons (0-4) were paced by six points each from Hannah Maremann, Sydney Parker and Jenna Garcia.
Logan 59, Bovina 41 — The Lady Longhorns built a 28-17 halftime lead and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Logan (1-1) got 23 points from Whitney Cordova, who was 7-of-9 from the free throw line, while Alyssa Whetten added 10 of her 18 points in the final stanza. Sam Villarreal had 13 points to pace the Fillies (0-6).
Dexter and Bovina face off at 8 a.m. today for seventh place, with Clovis JV and Logan playing for fifth at 11:30 a.m.
