• Last meeting: 2004, the Wolverines routed the Yellowjackets 47-7 at Clayton.
• Last week: Clayton lost at Santa Rosa 48-6, while Texico scored late and edged Tucumcari 22-21.
• Of note: Part of Clayton’s struggles have been the result of a challenging schedule, including games against larger schools such as Lubbock Roosevelt, Canadian (Texas) and Ulysses (Kan.). … Texico improved its playoff possibilities dramatically with last week’s victory. “It was a big win for us,” Wolverines coach Ryan Autrey said. “We’d probably be coming into this week’s game with a different attitude if we hadn’t pulled that one out.”
Fort Sumner (8-1, 1-1 District 2-1A) at Jal (3-5, 1-1)
• When: 7 p.m. today
• Last meeting: 2009, the Foxes defeated Jal 19-8 at Fort Sumner.
• Last week: Fort Sumner rolled to a 62-21 victory over Cloudcroft. The Panthers lost to Hagerman 42-10.
• Of note: With a win, Fort Sumner is likely to get a No. 2 seed behind Hagerman and, with it, a first-round bye in the six-team Class 1A playoffs. … Despite its record, Jal is ranked fifth in 1A and could make the playoffs. “They’re a pretty good team, and they have good speed,” Foxes coach Matt Moyer said. … Moyer said the Panthers were able to keep it close against Hagerman through the first half. … Key players for Jal include junior RB/CB Malik Anderson and senior QB/OLB Saxxon Artalejo.
Melrose (7-2, 2-0 8-man District 3) at Tatum (3-6, 1-1)
• When: 7 p.m. today
• Last meeting: 2009, Melrose crushed the Coyotes twice, 44-0 at home during the regular season and 64-14 at Tatum in the 8-man championship game.
• Last week: The Buffaloes erased a 12-0 deficit after one quarter to win at Gateway Christian 44-26, while Tatum received a victory by forfeit from Floyd.
• Of note: A win would probably give Melrose the No. 2 seed in the eight-team, 8-man playoffs. … The Buffs have beaten Tatum in the 8-man state finals in each of the past two seasons. “They’re still a decent team this year,” Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said. “They like to spread it out and throw the ball around a lot. … Roybal was concerned the Buffs had to come from behind at Gateway. “ We’ve got to play a lot better than we did in the first half (last week),” he said. … Senior QB Joseph Belsom, a transfer, leads the Coyotes.
Sudan (2-7, 1-2 District 3-1A Division II) at Bovina (3-5, 0-2)
• When: 7:30 p.m. (CDT) today
• Last meeting: 2009, the Mustangs beat Sudan 30-12 at Bovina.
• Last week: The Hornets lost to Springlake-Earth 49-15. Bovina had an open date.
• Of note: The Mustangs have lost five in a row, but the last four have been to teams ranked in or near the top 10 in Texas at some point this season. … This game will determine the third playoff team from the district. “They get after it,” Bovina coach Hector Guevara said of the Hornets. “They don’t back down to anything.” … Bovina is seeking its fifth playoff berth in the last six years. … Guevara said the bye week helped Bovina get closer to full strength. “We have to execute and (do) what we can,” he said. “I think our attitude and confidence is pretty good.”
Amarillo River Road (3-5, 2-3 District 1-2A Division I) at Muleshoe (7-1, 4-1)
• When: 7:30 p.m. (CDT) today
• Last meeting: 2009, the Mules lost to River Road 25-21 at Amarillo in the first round of the Class 2A Division I playoffs, ending the Mules’ 25-game winning streak dating to the start of the 2008 season.
• Last week: The Mules won at Littlefield 43-8 to pull into a tie for the district lead with the Wildcats and Bushland. River Road lost to Bushland 33-12.
• Of note: Mules coach David Wood said the only way Muleshoe won’t make the playoffs is if it loses its final two games and River Road wins out. … Senior QB Chris Perez, who also plays at RB, is the key man for the Wildcats. “He’s the real deal; we’ve got to contain him,” Wood said. … Senior WR/DB Christian Askins had 10 interceptions last season for River Road. … The Wildcats, who lost in the third round of last year’s playoffs, haven’t played up to expectations this season. “They’ve got most of their offensive line back,” Mules coach David Wood said. “They’ve struggled a little bit, but we can’t figure out why.”
