Portales 3, Clovis 1

Records: Clovis 4-5, Portales 6-5.

Portales 0 3 — 3

Clovis 0 1 — 1

Difference: After a scoreless first half, Kaitlin Garrett and Jenna Sievers sandwiched goals around a Taisha Bosque goal for Clovis to put Portales up for good at 2-1. All three goals came within a four-minute stretch.

By the numbers: Portales had seven shots on goal and four corner kicks. Clovis had nine shots on goal and one corner kick.

Dialing in: Garrett had three shots on goal, not including her score.

Insurance: Freshman midfielder Brynn Roberts scored her third goal of the season in the 60th minute.

Off the bench: Senior center midfielder Angie Porter has filled in admirably for Shalyn Bond, according to Portales coach Tracy Sievers. Bond, who had surgery last week for appendicitis last week, is expected to be out five weeks.

Coach’s comment: “We started out doing what we usually do with running two forwards up front, but we changed in the second half. Then we packed in the midfield by putting five midfielders out there and just had Jenna at the forward position. Then we worked on clearing the ball and trying to contain their forward.” — Tracy Sievers.

Up next: Portales hosts Ruidoso at noon Saturday.
