Of note: This will be the Foxes’ third consecutive home game. They hit the road only twice in their first eight contests. … Fort Sumner’s defense blanked Carrizozo until the final 18 seconds last week. The Foxes held the Grizzlies to 181 yards, with 60 yards coming on the late scoring drive. … Junior QB Kolter West sat out the second half with a right knee injury against Carrizozo, but Foxes coach Matt Moyer said he should be ready to go Friday night. … Senior QB Rudy Chavez leads the Tigers. “We feel like they rely on him to get it done,” Moyer said. “They like to throw the ball a lot, and he’s definitely got a good arm.” … Another key player for the Tigers is WR Logan Eshorn. Moyer said Capitan has good overall size.

Last week: The Falcons defeated Gateway Christian 44-35. Melrose saw its 27-game winning streak dating to the start of the 2008 season end in a 28-24 loss to Animas.
Of note: Melrose’s previous loss before last week came at home against eventual champion Mountainair in the 2007 8-man playoff semifinals. … Buffaloes coach Dickie Roybal said his squad enters the game much healthier than last week, with senior FB-LB Hayden Moore, junior TE-DB Daniel Lyons and junior TB-DE Lance Widner all returning from injury. “I think if those kids are healthy, we win the game last week,” Roybal said. … The Falcons like to try to spread the field and throw the ball, Roybal said.

Elida (1-1) at Clovis Christian (2-0)

Last week: Elida won at home over New Mexico School for the Deaf 33-26. CCS routed defending 6-man champion Lake Arthur 65-20.
Of note: Senior QB-DB Kevin Mitchell is one of the leaders for the Tigers. Mitchell was at CCS before transferring to Elida last year. “He’s kind of a jack-of-all-trades,” Eagles coach Jason Swann said. “He plays a lot of positions for them.” … Swann said the Tigers will challenge CCS with their overall speed. … The Eagles have scored 112 points and 45-pointed their first two opponents behind senior RB Mike Urioste and junior RB Kevin Naceanceno, who combined for nine touchdowns and 400 yards on the ground last week. “We’re tough to stop,” Swann said. “If you take one (of those two) away, the other can make you look foolish.” … Swann said the Eagles have to improve on their open-field tackling and special teams play.

Farwell (2-0) vs. Gruver (0-2)

Last meeting: The teams haven’t played within the last 10 or 15 years, Farwell coach Mike Prokop said.
Last week: Farwell won over Olton 19-7 with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Greyhounds lost to Texhoma 7-0.
Of note: The Steers are off to a fast start under Prokop, in his first year at Farwell. “We feel fortunate to be where we’re at,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better and not think we’ve done anything yet. Hopefully by the time we get to district we’ll be playing at our peak.” … Depth is a problem for the Greyhounds, Prokop said, noting their roster only numbers 17. “They have good skill people and some big linemen — just not a lot of them,” he said. … Overconfidence shouldn’t be a problem for the Steers. “I told (his players) we don’t have very many either,” he said. “We’ve got 12 (subs), so we’ve got six more than they do.”

Panhandle (0-2) at Bovina (2-0)

Last week: Panhandle lost to White Deer 12-0. Bovina, trailing 10-7 at halftime, stormed back for a 59-37 victory at Boys Ranch.
Of note: The Panthers have been a regular participant in the Class 2A playoffs in recent seasons, but with declining enrollment dropped into Class 1A this year. … Panhandle is young, but has talent, Bovina coach Hector Guevara said. “They’re big,” he said. “They’re not as fast as Boys Ranch, but they’re sound in all three phases of the game.” … Noting they gave up two long kickoff returns for touchdowns last week at Boys Ranch, Guevara is looking for the Mustangs to tackle better this week.

Muleshoe (2-0) at Andrews (2-0)

Last week: Andrews defeated Plainview 22-6. Muleshoe crushed Portales 49-8.
Of note: The Mustangs are in their third year as a Class 3A program after dropping from 4A. … Andrews will return the game next year at Muleshoe. … Mules coach David Wood said 21 of the Mustangs’ 22 starters are seniors. “They’ve got a lot of skill,” he said. “They probably have more depth in the skill positions than we do, but I feel good about our (first-string) matchups.” … This is the final non-district game for Muleshoe. “It’ll be areally good test for us,” Wood said. “It’ll be kind of a measuring stick.”

Vaughn (1-1) at Dora (0-2)

Notes: Dora coach Leonard Velasquez wants his team to be more physical. “We’ve been using the blocking dummies just so they will know they need to maintain a block on offense,” Velasquez said. “The team just can’t touch somebody and hope it is enough. On defense we’ve been practicing we’ve been working on wrapping up and tackling. ... Velasquez said Vaughn uses the spread formation. ... Sophomore Nick Berumen is Vaughn’s top threat. ... Dora is dedicating the field to Don Chapman in a ceremony before the game. Chapman donated the land for the school’s field.

Notes: “I watched Clovis Christian when they played Lake Arthur. Clovis Christian is a really aggressive team who has a lot of kids who can hit hard,” Elida coach Clay Ferguson said. “They just play sound, fundamental football.” ... Ferguson is also concerned about the Eagles’ speed. Senior Mike Urioste and junior Kevin Naceanceno rushed for a combined 400 yards and nine touchdowns last week. ... Both of Clovis Christian’s wins are by the 45-point mercy rule.

Menual (0-2) at Floyd (0-2)

Last week: Menual lost to Mountainair 38-6. Floyd lost Reserve 46-0.
Notes: Floyd is struggling with numbers. “We’re having a tough time, right now,” Floyd coach Rafael Roybal. “We have seven high school kids and one with a concussion and he may or may not play on Saturday. ... The Broncos have a good Menaul for about 20-30 plays in the preseason. “They are a very basic and fundamental team who runs out of an off-set I formation and I formation with one-split wide out,” Roybal said. “They’re huge. They don’t have a lot of speed, but they will try to run over us.” ... Menual has lost 13 straight games dating back to Halloween 2008. The Panthers’ last win was 48-0 against Foothill. ... Floyd has been outscored 92-20 this season.
