It’s their job to keep the players and fans pumped and excited on game night — and they know it’s a job that can’t be underestimated.

In Clovis, 155 band members and 14 cheerleaders complement the team, adding enthusiasm, rallying spirit and giving fans a show during games.

“We kind of like pump up the football team with our pep tunes,” Clovis High junior and band member Samuel Palacios said.

Drum Major Jeremy Urban said the band performs a complete show during games, including “Final Countdown” and local favorite “Grandioso,” also known as the “Fight Song.”

“We get standing ovations and a lot of cheering,” he said. “Sometimes it motivates the football players as well.”

Urban, who plays saxophone, said he is following in his father’s footsteps as a second-generation drum major.

Game performances also help the band prepare for contest performances and concerts. “It’s kind of important because it gives us experience to play in front of a crowd,” he said.

“The first game is kind of scary because you don’t know what to expect. After you do so many football games, competitions are a piece of cake.”

“Our role is to support our athletic teams and to build spirit and keep morale high during games. And we’re out there wind, snow, rain, hail. We’ll be out there to support our teams no matter what,” Portales High School Band Director Jennifer Johnson said.

And games involve a lot of practice and hard workouts for cheerleaders, all in the name of getting the crowd and players revved up and showing the players they have support.

“Some people think that all we do is look pretty,” Clovis cheerleading captain Megan Sundquist said. “(We bring) inspiration because we believe (in our team).”

The senior described a workout routine similar to that of the teams involving pushups, running stairs and much more.

“It’s hard but it’s fun — and then we get to throw girls in the air,” she said.

Clovis cheer coach BJ Bernet said standards changed about two years ago and now cheerleaders are classified as an athletic team.

“Now they condition as much as any other sport,” she said.

And what they bring to the field plays a big role in the spirit of the players, she said, explaining she gets requests for her girls to attend events from coaches in a multitude of sports throughout the year.

One of the unique requests she has had this year is for cheerleaders to attend a robotics event. “If they tell us they want some girls there, we’ll get some girls out there,” Bernet said.

“It does bring a lot of inspiration to the team, especially when times are tough... When coaches want my girls to be there, it means they’re needed.”

The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers cheerleaders spend their game week preparing for a show that last no more than two hours.

“We do it to support the guys,” junior cheerleader Lori Harmon said. “Most of us are athletes in another sport and know how important it is to have someone cheering for you.”

Harmon said at times school spirit is low. She said she and the other cheerleaders work to raise moral of the players and their fellow students on and off the field.

“We do this to show our spirit,” junior Tori Carmichael said. “We also want to show others we can do this, and despite what they say, this is a sport.”

Carmichael said the team practices during the week and on game day they have a walk through of their routine.

“So many people say being a cheerleader is not a sport,” Tucumcari cheer coach Christine Montano said. “These girls put their heart and soul into what they do just like any other athlete.”
