Jessie Hooper and Mychael Sturm came through with a win at No. 3 doubles Tuesday and Portales’ boys edged Ruidoso 5-4 in a Class 1-3A District 2 matchup at the PHS courts.
The Portales girls, meantime, had it much easier, routing the Lady Warriors 9-0.
Portales went 4-2 in boys singles, but No. 1 player Ryan Wood had to leave due to another school commitment. It came down to the No. 3 doubles match after the Warriors won at No. 1 and No. 2.
“It was good to have those young kids step up,” Rams coach Brian Kirchner said. “We actually lost to this team 9-0 last year, so it was a big improvement.”
Ryan Wood won 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1, Kacy Vigil posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 2, Nathan Walker dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 3, Brandon Carter won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 4, Raymike Montoya won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and Jessie Hoper posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6.
In doubles, Vigil and Walker lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and Carter and Montoya were beaten 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Lady Rams had little trouble with Ruidoso, losing only 17 games in six singles mastches and 11 games in three doubles contests.
“They (Lady Rams) were a little more aggressive, which is what we’ve been working on,” PHS girls coach Sara Meeks said. “You can’t complain a 9-0 win.”
In singles, Shelby Lucero won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Makynsi Whited won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Megan Combs won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, Stephania Gutierrez won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, Sabrina Montoya won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Emily Walker won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
In doubles, Lucero and Combs posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1, Whited and Gutierrez were 6-2, 6-3 winners at No. 2 and Walker and Walker and Montoya prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Portales teams are home again on Thursday for district duals against New Mexico Military, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
