Class 5A
No. 5 Clovis (23-4) vs. No. 1 Eldorado (28-1), 1:15 p.m. today at Santa Ana Star Center, Rio Rancho
Radio: KCLV-FM 99.1. Broadcast also available at kclvsports.com (Clovis webcast).
Quarterfinal round: Clovis defeated Gallup 67-57 behind 35 points from senior post Antiesha Brown — her fourth 35-point outing of the season and second against the Lady Bengals. Eldorado turned back two-time defending state champion La Cueva 54-46.
Eldorado players to watch: Kya DeGarmo, 5-1 Sr. PG; Natalie Kane, 5-10 Sr. F; Ashley Hoisington, 5-10 Sr. F.
Of note: The Eagles’ only loss was to Hobbs 49-47 in a holiday tournament at Las Cruces. Eldorado has won 22 in a row since then. … The winner advances to Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. championship game at The Pit in Albuquerque against either third-seeded Las Cruces High (26-2) or second-seeded Sandia (26-3), who play the 4:45 p.m. semifinal today at the Star Center. … CHS coach Jeff Reed said the Eagles play a similar style to Gallup — up-and-down with pressure — but may mix it up more than the Lady Bengals did. “It’s probably a good deal for us,” Reed said. “It’s hard to press us with (junior) Ashley Pierson and Antiesha.” … Reed said the diminutive DeGarmo got into foul trouble in the loss to Hobbs, but is the sparkplug for Eldorado. She handles the ball well, shoots 3-pointers effectively and is probably the team’s best all-around player.
Class 2A
No. 1 Texico (24-5) vs. No. 4 Penasco (23-6), 11:30 a.m. today at Santa Ana Star Center, Rio Rancho
Radio: KMRQ-FM 101.5.
Quarterfinal round: The Lady Wolverines held overmatched Pecos to two field goals in a 57-8 rout, while the Lady Panthers pulled away in the second half to beat Hagerman 56-39.
Penasco players to watch: Maria Sam, 5-5 Sr. PG; Marcella Sanchez, 5-9 Fr. F; Abigail Soto, 6-1 So. P.
Of note: The teams have met in two of the previous three state tournaments. Texico beat the Lady Panthers 41-38 for the 2007 championship, and won 53-31 last year in a quarterfinal game. … Both teams come in red-hot — Texico has won 17 games in a row, Penasco 13. … Soto gained her academic eligibility at the semester for Penasco. … The Lady Panthers’ fullcourt pressure took its toll on Hagerman after a competitive first-half. “We’re definitely going to have to do a good job handling the ball against their press,” Lady Wolverines coach Keith Durham said. … The winner advances to Friday’s 4 p.m. championship game against either second-seeded Santa Rosa (27-3) or third-seeded Navajo Pine (24-2), who play at 8 a.m. today at the Star Center.
