• Down by 17 points, Muleshoe staged a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback Friday night to stun Sonora 71-58 in a Texas Class 2A area round game at Midland Lee H.S.
The Mules (20-14) outscored the Broncos 34-4 in the final period, getting five 3-pointers from four players and scoring from seven players altogether.
“It was one of the wildest games I’ve seen,” Mules coach Matt Mason said. “We just dominated the fourth quarter. It seemed like we couldn’t miss and they couldn’t score.”
Muleshoe returns to action with a 6:30 p.m. (CST) regional quarterfinal game Monday at Levelland High School against Idalou, which eliminated Friona on Friday night.
Junior forward Cooper Washington led four Mules in double figures with 20 points. Mason said he “kept us in striking range (early) with his offensive rebounds.”
Zack Toscano added 13 points, Tyson Turnbow 12 and Nick Hurtado 11. Turnbow and Hurtado each had three of the Mules nine 3-pointers.
• At Snyder High School, Farwell saw an 11-point halftime lead slip away but recovered to beat Van Horn 45-43 in a Class 1A Division I area round game.
Farwell (24-8) returns to action in a 7 p.m. (CST) regional quarterfinal game on Monday against Seagraves at the Rip Griffin Center at Lubbock Christian University.
The Steers built a 26-15 halftime lead, but Van Horn (15-12) rallied to tie the game 32-32 after three periods. Farwell opened a six-point lead down the stretch and held on.
“We played real good defense,” Steers coach Shane Perkins said. “We had a bad third quarter and turned the ball over a lot , but we got refocused in the fourth quarter and made the plays when we needed to.”
Senior center Octavio Chavez scored 12 points and junior guard Landry Actkinson added 10 for the Steers.
Girls
• Junior post Kelli Merrick scored 19 points and top-seeded Dora (21-6) pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Floyd 41-34 in the District 3-1A tournament championship game at Dora.
The Lady Coyotes led 26-24 entering the final stanza. Junior guard Tori Tucker scored 16 points for the Lady Broncos (19-7), seeded second in the five-team event.
