Lovington (23-4) at Portales (15-8), 7 p.m. today in the District 4-3A tournament championship.
Radio: KSEL-FM 105.9.
Last outing: Lovington, seeded second in the four-team stepladder event, advanced on Thusday with a 63-59 win at home over Ruidoso. Portales played the Lady Warriors in the regular-season finale at PHS on Saturday, and won 32-19.
Season series: The Lady Rams handed Lovington half its losses this season, and handily — winning 52-24 at Portales on Feb. 5 and 50-22 at Lovington on Feb. 13.
Notes: PHS coach Clay Stout said the Lady Rams have been nursing injuries to starters Jenna Wagner (ankle), Ashley Hernandez (elbow) and Gabby Garcia (shoulder) and top reserve Danae Garza (back). All except Hernandez sat out the last game against Ruidoso. Stout said Hernandez and Garcia should be OK tonight, while Wagner and Garza are more iffy. … Since a 30-28 loss at home to Class 5A Clovis on Jan. 19, Portales has won seven of its last nine. … Stout said the two routs of Lovington were keyed by “defense and rebounding, and we took care of the ball on offense.” … Among the top players for the Lady Wildcats are 5-9 junior G Kenzie Black and 5-6 sophomore PG Mystica Perez. … Tonight’s winner is guaranteed a first-round home game next week in the 3A state tournament. … Stout isn’t about to take anything for granted. “It’s always difficult when you play a team three times,” he said. “We’re going to have to be sharp mentally and physically.”
