ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams won a slugfest Thursday night.

Junior forward Gabby Garcia scored 10 points, and the Lady Rams pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 27-21 victory over Roswell High.

Portales (7-5) blanked the Lady Coyotes in the first quarter, but didn’t open much breathing room until late. The Lady Rams had an eight-point lead before Roswell High (8-6) scored just before the final buzzer.

Despite what PHS coach Clay Stout termed “a physical game,” the teams combined to shoot only seven free throws — just two by Portales.

“They (officials) just didn’t call a whole lot (of fouls),” Stout said. “Neither team got a lot of good looks at (the basket).

“We finally got a little separation in the fourth quarter.”

Garcia had two baskets in the final quarter while three other players had one each as the Lady Rams outscored Roswell 10-6.

The teams played to an 8-8 tie at halftime. Portales led most of the second half.

“ I just thought our execution got better (after the break),” Stout said. “The kids did a good job of running the offense in the second half.

“And I was really pleased with our poise in the fourth quarter.”

Portales returns to action on Saturday, hosting Roswell Goddard in a 3:30 p.m. tipoff at the PHS gym.
