The Texico Lady Wolverines survived a high-scoring first-quarter Monday, then ran Alamogordo out of the gym in the next two periods in a 70-49 quarterfinal win over the Lady Tigers in the Plateau Holiday Classic.
Texico (7-3), which faces Cibola in 2:45 p.m. semifinal today, cranked out nine 3-pointers — four of them by junior guard Victoria Richards. Leading 22-20 after one period, the Lady Wolverines outscored Alamo 19-4 in the second period and 20-5 in the third to build a 32-point cushion.
Richards finished with 15 points for Texico, while junior foward Shaylee Anderson added 12 and senior guard Shannon Van Matre chipped in 11.
Senior guard Shanae Hilliard took game honors with five 3-pointers and 25 points for the Lady Tigers (4-5). Sophomore guard Genaveva Rodriguez and senior post Kelle Smith added 10 each for Alamo, which got points from just four players.
“The girls played really well on both ends of the court,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “They shot the ball really well.”
It was Texico’s first game since a three-overtime loss at Friona on Dec. 18. Durham, who led the Lady Wolverines to back-to-back Class 2A state titles in 2007 and 2008, said he thought the respite helped his squad.
“We had seven days off for Christmas,” he said. “It was good for the girls to get away from (basketball) and come back refreshed.”
