RIO RANCHO — After a sluggish first half, the Portales Lady Rams quickly took control when play resumed.

Sophomore post Macy Miller scored seven of her game-high 12 points during a 14-3 domination of the third period Saturday and Portales went on to beat host Rio Rancho High 32-21 in the fifth-place game of the Mel Otero Invitational.

The teams slogged their way to an 11-11 halftime time before the Lady Rams (3-2) turned the tide.

“We got off to a really slow start,” PHS coach Clay Stou said. “The third quarter, we came out with some fire in our eyes, and that was the difference.”

Stout said the Lady Rams made some adjustments in their offensive sets after halftime, and also stepped up their defensive pressure.

“It really opened some things up,” he said of the adjustments. “We just had better ball movement.”

Senior Jenna Wagner had nine ponts for Portales. Meantime, Kelsey Hawkins’ six points topped Rio Rancho.

Clovis took the tournament championship later on Saturday with a 41-35 win over Manzano. Mayfield beat Montrose, Colo. for third place while Rio Rancho Cleveland knocked off Aztec for seventh place.

Portales returns to action on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. (MST) game at Muleshoe.
