GALLUP — Clovis High’s girls eased into the new season Thursday with a first-round blowout in the Gallup Invitational.
Senior Antiesha Brown tallied 18 points and nine Lady Wildcats scored Thursday in a 63-22 thumping of Los Lunas.
The Lady Cats face a rematch from last year’s tournament , taking on Winslow, Ariz., in a 6 p.m. tipoff today. Last season, the Lady Bulldogs beat CHS 59-45 and went on to top host Gallup 48-45 to take the championship.
“You better believe I let the girls know that,” second-year CHS coach Jeff Reed said. “We really would like to beat them and get to the championship game.”
Clovis bolted to a 19-4 lead at the end of one quarter and was never seriously challenged by the Lady Tigers (0-3). Reed subbed freely the rest of the way.
“We did a lot of subbing just to see what we have,” he said. “We wanted to see different combinations.
“We had a little lapse defensively (in the second quarter) with our second team. Other than that, we played pretty good defense.”
Sophomore post Paige Gardner added 10 points for the Lady Cats. The top scorer for the Lady Tigers was senior post Priscilla Griego with eight points.
