Santa Rosa (4-2) at Texico (6-0)
When: 7 p.m. today in the District 2-2A opener for both teams.
Last week: Santa Rosa won at Cloudcroft 47-0, while the Wolverines had an open date.
Last meeting: 2008, the Wolverines edged Santa Rosa 28-14 in district play and 28-21 in a Class 2A semifinal en route to the title. Both games were at Santa Rosa.
What to watch for: The Wolverines will have to defend Santa Rosa’s testy single-wing attack. Coach Ryan Autrey said the key is to be disciplined and physical on defense.
Of note: The Lions have been coming on after starting the season slowly. Santa Rosa has won four in a row, outscoring its opponents 189-13, after losses to Albuquerque Academy and Tularosa to start the season.
Quotable: “They’ve always got tough, disciplined kids. They’re playing real well right now. This is the time of season that’s important.” — Autrey.
Fort Sumner (5-2) at Carrizozo (3-4)
When: 7 p.m. today in a District 2-1A game.
Last week: Fort Sumner won its district opener over Jal 19-8, while Carrizozo lost at Loving 16-14.
Last meeting: 2008, Fort Sumner shut out the Grizzlies 59-0.
What to watch for: The Bears should be more balanced than previous run-heavy squads, but coach Matt Moyer said senior quarterback Cody Ventura will likely be more comfortable running the option than throwing the ball. That’s why the Foxes want to make Carrizozo a throw-first team.
“That’s always our philosophy,” Moyer said. “We want to take away the run completely.”
Mellow about yellow: Moyer said one of the biggest keys in last week’s win was avoiding the penalty flag. The Foxes drew just two penalties for 10-yards. That helped a young Fox offense — which has made many mistakes leading to short fields for the Fort Sumner defense — stay out of 3rd-and-long situations later in drives.
Quotable: “We’re not the greatest throwing team, so that’s tough on us. Those penalties are drive-killers.” — Moyer.
Elida (3-2) at Lake Arthur (5-1)
When: 7 p.m. today
Last week: Elida beat House 59-12. Lake Arthur had open date.
Last meeting: The teams have never met.
Lake Arthur player to watch: Running back Angelo Rivera ran for 8 touchdowns against Dora in a 100-52 romp.
Notes: This is a 6-man District 2. … Elida coach Ralph Gawehn said he expects Lake Arthur to run the ball on the outside. “We’re going to try and shut their running game down,” he said. “We’ve got some small guys with some speed that can get up the middle and take them out.”
Logan (6-1) at Floyd (2-5)
When: 1 p.m. Saturday
Last week: Floyd fell to Springer 12-8, while Logan beat Valley Christian 90-14.
Last meeting: 2008, Floyd defeated Logan 60-8.
Notes: Floyd has lost three in a row and has been plagued by injuries. The Broncos are 3-2 against Logan and currently have a two game winning streak over the Longhorns. … Floyd coach Rafael Roybal said Logan is going to run some leads, dives, sweeps and options against his defense. “We’ve got a pretty good look at their fullback who can run really well,” Roybal said. “Their tailback is a good-sized young man. We’ve been working to align with Logan’s strengths and try to balance that.”
Dora (3-3) at House (4-3)
When: 4 p.m. today
Last week: Dora lost to Hondo 36-0. House fell to Elida 59-12.
Last meeting: The teams have never met.
Players to watch: Seniors Bobby Lee and Jarod Allen provide the Cowboys with speed in the backfield.
Notes: Both teams are on two-game losing streaks. … Dora coach Pablo Pena said House is a spread offense team. … The Coyotes have been troubled by injuries so House will be looking to take advantage of Dora’s lack of depth.
Quotable: “They are going to throw. They have a really good quarterback. We’ve seen them at scrimmage and on film. There quarterback is fast.” — Pena, on House.
Farwell (2-4) at Sudan (2-4)
When: 7:30 p.m. (CDT) today
Last week: In District 5-1A openers, the Steers lost to Springlake-Earth 42-9 on Saturday while the Hornets rolled over Morton 47-6.
Last meeting: 2008, the Steers posted a 34-8 victory over Sudan in Farwell.
Of note: Sudan got off to an unusually slow start, but may be back on track after the rout of Morton. “They’re a big, good football team,” Farwell coach Mark Anglin said. “They’ve played some good football teams.” … The teams have had one common opponent — Farwell lost 15-13 to Plains while the Hornets were shut out by the Cowboys 34-0. … Anglin said Sudan’s slot-T offense is similar to those the Steers faced against Plains and Clayton earlier this season.
Quotable: “We’ve got to get back on track. We need to run our offense to be successful. This game is huge for us.” — Anglin.
Bovina (4-2) at Boys Ranch (4-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. (CDT) today
Last week: In District 5-1A openers for both teams, Bovina lost to Nazareth 43-42 while Boys Ranch cruised past Claude 53-0.
Last meeting: 2008, Boys Ranch edged the Mustangs 14-13 in Bovina.
What to watch for: Bovina coach Hector Guevara doesn’t see a lot of weaknesses from the Roughriders.
“They block well, they do everything well. We’ve just got to play some good football and finish.”
The game could turn into a shootout — given the speedy James Murphy at quarterback for Boy’s Ranch and Bovina’s experience with a high-scoring affair last week.
Quotable: “I don’t know if we can score at will, but we haven’t had difficulty scoring.” — Guevara, noting that the Mustangs may have to win another shootout this week.
