DEXTER — Portales’ volleyball team ended a four-match losing skid on Tuesday night, beating Dexter 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-7 in the District 4-3A opener for both teams.
The Lady Rams (7-6, 1-0 district) struggled with their serving during the first two games, helping the Lady Demons stay in the match.
In the third game, Portales pulled away to a more comfortable margin before completely dominating the fourth set.
“We played pretty well that game,” Portales coach Ruth Chavez said of the fourth set. “We just came out and had a really good game. We had some service errors in that first game.”
Seniors LeAnne Blaeser and Jenna Wagner helped to rally the team in the third game. Chavez said Wagner had some kills at key points in the game to keep Portales ahead of the Lady Demons (4-11, 0-1).
“Gabby Garcia had a good night for us, and Jenna Wagner had a lot of kills,” Chavez said. “She had a good night hitting.”
Portales is at home on Thursday for a non-district match against Artesia, with the junior varsity match set for 5:30 p.m
