CANYON, Texas — A team that has won 28 consecutive matches should be impressive, and Clovis High volleyball coach Darrel Ray was duly impressed.
Canyon Randall, ranked No. 2 in Texas Class 4A, improved to 28-1 for the season Tuesday night with a 25-6, 25-18, 25-12 victory over the Lady Wildcats.
“They’re a very, very, very good team,” Ray said. “That’s the best team I’ve seen since I’ve been a head coach. They have very good athleticm and a wonderful set of skills.”
Nonetheless, the Lady Cats (5-5) bounced back from a first-game drubbing to lead for much of the second set. The Lady Raiders erased a 15-12 deficit in the second game with the help of a jump-serve that Clovis found tough to handle.
“I know they changed their setter out (in that game) and they didn’t set as well,” Ray said. “But we finallly got over the ‘wow’ factor. We kind of settled in a little bit.”
Senior middle blocker Antiesha Brown led the Lady Cats with seven kills and two blocks. Sophomore Kirsti Shough had four kills.
The Lady Cats are back in action on Thursday, facing Roswell High in a 6:45 p.m. start at Rock Staubus Gym.
