Springlake-Earth (1-0) at Texico (1-0)

Last week: Texico opened with a 33-13 win at Dexter in a rematch of last year’s Class 2A championship game. Springlake-Earth handed Vega a 26-6 loss at home.
Last meeting: 2008, Texico won the battle of “Wolverines” 34-12 at Earth, Texas.
What to expect: Texico coach Ryan Autrey said his team will have to contain Springlake-Earth’s speed. “They’ve got a pretty tough backfield,” he said. “They’ve got some speed, and they’re capable of big plays if you’re not in the right position.”
Of note: Texico broke open a tie game at Dexter with three fourth-quarter touchdown runs by senior QB Seth Bailey.

Fort Sumner (1-0) at Clayton (0-0)
When:

Last week: The defending Class 1A champion Foxes opened their season with a 38-7 win over New Mexico Military. The Yellowjackets had an open date.
Last meeting: 2008, the Foxes beat Clayton twice, including a 48-0 win in the Class 1A state championship game. They also won 35-0 at Fort Sumner in Week 2.
What to expect: The Yellowjackets have one of the better RBs in 1A in senior Samuel Overmeyer. They also have an edge in numbers over the Foxes, and possess good overall size. “We’re hoping we’ve got our jitters out against NMMI,” Foxes coach Matt Moyer said. “We had a lot of miscues last week. Really, I just told the kids, ‘We’ve got to get better at what we do.’”
Of note: When NMMI scored first last week, it marked the first time Fort Sumner had trailed in a game since its lone loss last season against Santa Rosa in Week 4.

Melrose (1-0) at Menaul (0-1)
When:

Last week: The Buffs opened defense of their 8-man state championship with a 5 6-6 thrashing of visiting Magdalena. Menaul lost at home to Bataan Military 28-16.
Last meeting: 2008, the Buffaloes cruised to a 68-0 win over the Panthers in Melrose.

Springer (0-1) at Clovis Christian (1-0)
When:

Last week: Springer dropped a 48-30 decision at Logan, while the Eagles went on the road for a 46-12 victory over Gateway Christian at Roswell.
Last meeting: 2008, Clovis Christian defeated the Red Hawks 24-14 at Springer.

Muleshoe (1-0) at Portales (1-0)

Last week: The Mules, defending Texas Class 2A Division I state champions, opened with a 27-14 victory over Levelland at home. Meantime, the Rams, defending Class 3A Texas state champions, held on late for a 42-41 victory at home over Las Vegas Robertson.
Last meeting: 2008, Muleshoe outgunned the Rams 63-35 at home en route to a 15-0 season. The
What to expect: The Mules figure if they can contain Rams senior RB Jesus Davalos, who ran for 342 yards last week, they’ll be in business. “You’ve got to stop the running back,” Muleshoe coach David Wood said of Davalos. “He’s awful good. If we stop him, we win the game. If we don’t stop him, there’s no telling what the outcome could be.”
Of note: The Mules and Rams combined for more than 1,000 yards in last year’s clash, including more than 350 yards passing from each side. Portales quarterback Michael Trujillo threw five scoring passes while Muleshoe QB Wes Wood tossed six.

Farwell (0-1) at Plains (1-0)
When:

Last meeting: 2008, Farwell defeated the Cowboys 16-13 at Farwell.
Last week: The Steers are coming off a 33-6 loss at Olton in last week’s opener, while Plains opened the season with a 40-7 victory over Wink.

Sudan (1-0) at Bovina (1-0)

Last meeting: 2008, the Hornets topped the Mustangs 22-12 at Sudan.
What to expect: “We did a lot of things right last week,” Mustangs coach Hector Guevara said. “We just want to build on that energy we had coming into the second half.”
Of note: Bovina has its home opener following last week’s 29-20 win at Hale Center. … Guevara said the Hornets, coming off a 20-12 win over Ralls, have 19 seniors on the roster.
