The Tucumcari Rattlers look to avenge last year’s 27-point loss to the Carrizozo Grizzlies when they open their season on Friday night in Carrizozo.
“We are not taking these guys lightly,” said Rattlers head football coach David Hutchins. “We have a lot of respect for the Grizzlies. We still remember the 47-20 loss we suffered by them last year.”
Hutchins said the team is aware of the Grizzlies’ talent on the field.
“They like to run a pro-defense,” Hutchins said. “They also run a few spread-offense sets. Their quarterback is a great player.”
Hutchins said the leadership of the upperclassmen and the spirit of the team has impressed him since the start of two-a-day workouts.
“The whole team has taken ownership of their team,” Hutchins said. “People can expect to see a whole new attitude out of the Rattlers this year.
Rattlers senior quarterback Alex Hutchins said the team is working together a lot better than it was at the end of the 2008 season.
“We have grown a lot,” Alex Hutchins said. “We have come a long way since last year. The experience and working together as a team will be key this season.”
The Rattlers’ renewed spirit and teamwork is augmented by the number of players suiting up for the team this season.
“Last year we had 21 players suit up for the playoff game,” said senior Jakus Martinez. “This year we will have at least 52 players by Friday. This is going to help us out a great deal.”
Martinez said the added manpower will allow for player substitutions during the game and limit the number of players that have to play on offense and defense).
The game begins at 7 p.m. Friday.
