ROSWELL — Junior Jordan Hill scored one touchdown on each side of the ball to highlight Clovis High’s scrimmage against defending Class 5A state champion Las Cruces at the Wool Bowl.

CHS assistant coach Darren Kelley said each team scored once on defense and three times overall in series from the middle of the field. In goalline situations, the Bulldawgs scored twice and the Wildcats once.

“We held our own,” Kelley said. “We’ve got a lot of improving to do. The biggest part of it has to come from our effort.

“At times we didn’t run to the football (on defense). But we got better as the scrimmage progressed.”

Hill, competing with senior Kyler Brewer-Hill for the starting QB position, tallied on a 40-yard interception return and also turned an option play upfield 30 yards to the end zone. The Cats’ other TD came on a 60-yard run by junior Quran Wiggins.

Juan Rivas accounted for the Cats’ score on goalline situations.

“At times we hit really well, but we didn’t finish them on some series when we had a chance,” Kelley said. “One time, they had a third-and-13 and we gave them 14 yards; another time they had third-and-6 and we gave them 8 yards.”

Kelley said senior Emery Sierra had a solid scrimmage at linebacker for the Cats, while the offensive line and running backs also played well in general.

“Live competition helps us with the speed of the game,” Kelley said. “We’ve got to get a little smarter and a little faster.”

He said the Cats came out of the scrimmage healthy. “I don’t think we had any injuries at all,” he said.

Clovis opens the regular season on Friday at Alamogordo.
