ALBUQUERQUE — The Floyd Broncos put themselves in position to pull off an upset over third-seeded Santa Rosa, but errors did the Broncos in for a 5-3 loss in Monday’s opening round of the Class 1A-2A state baseball tournament.

No. 14 Floyd (11-10) got a four-hitter from junior Chet Chenault, who went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. But four errors led to three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the Broncos’ fate.

“Chet pitched tremendously,” Floyd coach Darwin Chenault said, “but the errors decided the game unfortunately.”

Santa Rosa (20-4) faces either Lordsburg or Gallup Catholic.

“That’s a big 2A team,” Chenault said of the Lions, “and we hung in with them.”
