Freshman Cynthia Armijo went 7-for-7, and the rest of her team had little trouble as the Portales Rams swept Dexter 11-1, 14-4 to close out the regular season.
Portales finished 8-4 in District 4-3A play to tie Ruidoso, but the Warriors took first place in district by virtue of winning three of four from Portales (15-11), including a sweep at Portales May 1.
The doubleheader against the Demons was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to a New Mexico Activities Assocation postponement after some schools closed due to swine flue concerns.
The game was scheduled again for Thursday, but moved when umpires could not be acquired.
The wins over Dexter (9-17) shouldn’t have too much bearing when the NMAA seeds the state softball tournament Sunday, but Portales coach Robbie Crowley hated the idea of going to Las Cruces with no game action since the doubleheader against Ruidoso.
“I wanted to play these games,” Crowley said, “because we needed them going into the state tournament.”
LeAnne Blaeser went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, and pitched a five-hitter to win the first game. Amanda Marquez pitched five innings before giving way to Blaeser in the sixth, and the Lady Rams scored six runs in the sixth to close out the Demons.
“Dexter’s pitcher struggled toward the last few innings,” Crowley said.
