High schools in New Mexico have been cleared to resume normal activities earlier than planned, now that health officials have determined swine flu concerns no longer warrant school closings.
New Mexico Activities Association spokesman Robert Zayas also announced another round of rescheduling for state championship events. Events initially were rescheduled earlier this week after five New Mexico schools closed some classrooms.
NMAA executive director Gary Tripp said suspending activities was to ensure fairness to all athletes.
Numerous local sporting events have been rescheduled:
Baseball: The Portales High school baseball team, seeded sixth in Class 3A, will host a best-of-three series Friday and Saturday against 11th-seeded Raton.
There will be a 6 p.m. Friday game and 10 a.m. Saturday at Ram Field. If necessary, a third game would follow Saturday.
Portales coach Arturo Ontiveros said the team was a little upset to be seeded so low after edging Ruidoso for the District 4-3A title last week.
“The thing we talked about at our district meeting is a district championship isn’t what it used to be,” said Ontiveros, whose squad went 13-3 in district and 15-8 overall. “That’s the only gripe we had. But ... we should have took care of business.”
Clovis, meanwhile, received the No. 15 seed in Class 5A. The Wildcats (11-15) will travel to Rio Rancho for a 4 p.m. Friday game and a potential 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader.
First-round winners will qualify for the state tournament, which runs May 14-16 in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
Class 1A and 2A teams will be seeded Friday, with the 16-team fields heading to Albuquerque May 11-16 for the championships. Previously, the first round was to be hosted by district champions with winners re-seeded going into Albuquerque.
Softball: Clovis High will host Hobbs in a 6 p.m. contest today at Lady Wildcat Complex, while Portales faces Dexter in a 4 p.m. home doubleheader.
Teams will be seeded Sunday, with the state tournament May 14-16 in Las Cruces.
Golf: The Clovis golf teams will have their district tournament Friday at Hobbs’ Ocotillo Park Golf Course. Portales’ golf team will have its district tournament Friday at Lovington Country Club.
The Class 1A-3A tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at the University of New Mexico. The Class 5A tournament is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at New Mexico State University.
Track and field: The Clovis High track team will travel to Hobbs on Friday for the District 4-5A meet, while Portales will host the District 4-3A meet with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m.
The state track meet will be May 15-16 at the University of New Mexico.
