LOVINGTON — The Portales girls tennis team is going to be busy the next two weekends.

The Lady Rams will be in Albuquerque for the team championships this weekend, and six Portales girls players will be back the following weekend for individual championships.

“I’m very proud of my girls,” said Portales girls coach Sara Bulls. “I don’t think either Lovington or Ruidoso expected to make it this far.”

Portales will go in as the district runnerup for team competition after splitting duals with Lovington and Ruidoso Friday. Seeding is Sunday, and Portales will play at either 8 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. at Albuquerque Academy.

Singles and doubles competition was played Saturday. The top four singles and doubles teams will make the trip to Albuquerque May 13-15.

Individuals going for Portales are second-seeded Shelby Lucero and third-seeded Marissa Best. Both Lucero and Best defeated Nikki Kerby of Lovington and were defeated by Jamie Haarmeyer of Lovington.

Portales’ doubles teams both lost semifinal matchups. In a matchup of teammates, Makynsi Whited and Kim Spotswood defeated Megan Combs and Sabrina Montoya.

In boys action, Walker Partin will be going to individual championships as the district’s No. 2 seed in singles.
