Shelby Lucero returns a shot in her No. 1 singles match Tuesday against Clovis’ Kalee Haragan.

With district tournaments on the horizon, the Portales and Clovis high tennis teams got in one last sister city matchup.

Clovis’ girls had little problem, posting a 9-0 win, while the Ram boys claimed two of three doubles matches to grab a 5-4 victory at Clovis High School.

Portales, which travels to Lovington Friday and Saturday for district tournament play, got the dual victory when Ray Mike Montoya and Brandon Carter, who both dropped their singles matches, teamed up to beat Josh Williams and Charlie Sharp in a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“It’s a good sign,” said Portales coach Brian Kirchner. “We’ve been working on doubles. It’s been our weak point and Clovis is really good at doubles, especially going to the net.”

Kirchner said he knew Clovis was playing a few players out of their normal positions to get ready for district, but a win was still positive and both Walker Partin and Ryan Wood got good singles matches to prepare them for Saturday’s individual competition.

Team competition is Friday for both district championships. Clovis heads to Carlsbad, and each Wildcat squad needs to beat either Carlsbad or Hobbs to qualify for state.

The girls dual, however, was all Clovis, with no match going to a third set.

Junior Shay Brady, who cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Makynsi Whited in No. 4 singles and teamed up with Kalee Haragan for a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 doubles, said without meaning any disrespect to Portales, their Class 3A rivals weren’t quite the tuneup Clovis needed.

“We just have to work on our intensity, bring the heat (for the weekend),” Brady said.
