HOBBS — The Hobbs Lady Eagles took advantage of fielding misadventures by Clovis High Saturday to sweep the Lady Wildcats 5-2 and 8-1 in District 4-5A softball.
Clovis (6-15, 1-5 district) had four errors in the opener and five in the nightcap.
“When you make errors and don’t bring your bats, it’s going to be tough,” CHS coach Brandi Thomas said.
The Lady Cats took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second in the opener when Stefanee Ricketson singled, Vanessa Gallegos walked and Charlotte Varney followed with a two-run double.
Cerra Yohner then bunted for a single, giving the Lady Cats runners at the corners with no one out. But Hobbs’ Jucey Moyers got two strikeouts and a popup to get out of the inning and didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way.
The Lady Eagles (13-9, 2-3) tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second, then took the lead for good with two in the third.
Senior left-hander Adrianna Aguilar tossed a complete game for Clovis, allowing nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.
In the second game, Hobbs chased Aguilar in a four-run third which made the score 7-0. Varney singled in the fourth and eventually scored on a single by Sharae Kuchta for the Lady Cats’ only run.
Evelyn Duarte pitched a seven-hitter for Hobbs. Varney finished 2-for-3 for the Lady Cats.
The Lady Cats are at home for their final two regular-season games, district contests against Carlsbad either Friday or Saturday and against Hobbs on May 5.
